Genre horror director Ti West is a scary-movie veteran with four features to his credit and he's still not out of his 20s. His latest is an 80s-style shocker which promises much at first – particularly with a pastiche-grindhouse credit sequence that Tarantino himself might admire. Newcomer Jocelin Donahue plays a hard-up college student who takes a babysitting job at a spooky old house for this weirdo rich guy, played by Tom Noonan. It's only once she's arrived, that this man confesses it isn't a child she has to watch over, but his elderly mother. Inevitably, the eerie atmosphere of the deserted house is far creepier than the subsequent grossout action.

Has there ever been a movie where a teenage baby-sitter enjoyed a pleasant evening? Sam gets a break in "The House of the Devil." She discovers there isn't a baby at all. Only the aged mother of Mr. Ulman, a sinister man played by Tom Noonan, who is my choice to portray The Judge in Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian, and if you have read that gruesome masterpiece, there is nothing more I need say about Mr. Ulman. The plot concerns a young college student who is hired as a babysitter at an isolated house and is soon caught up in bizarre and dangerous events as she fights for her life. Ti West seems destined to be one of those horror film directors who forever will polarise opinions. For those of us who love the slow burn approach and admire his evident adoration of retro horror, then he hits the mark. Reference The House of the Devil and latterly The Innkeepers. If those two things don't strike a chord with you then it's very likely that The House of the Devil will drive you nuts - but not in a good way.
